Package Manager

A hypercasual Android game designed for a course module to showcase knowledge of high quality UI design.

  • Original game created in Unity, an open-source game engine
  • Developed for a second year university module focusing on UI and UX.
  • All programming was done in C#.

  • Single person project lasting roughly three and a half months, from January 11th to April 26th.

Project Overview

As part of a module surrounding User Interface and User Experience, I was tasked in designing a small mobile game to show understanding of both UI and UX, as well as how to playtest a game and use feedback in an agile development model. Package Manager is a showcase of this, as a simplistic puzzle game involving combining numbered packages to match orders of certain numbers. Due to the complexity of the core mechanic for a hypercasual game, my main focus was in tutorialization and clear explanation of the game loop.

Project Challenges
  • Due to the organization of parcels being on the UI Canvas in Unity, the game suffered from optimization and animation issues, which were worked around during development.

  • After the first playtest it became clear that the game's core loop was not clear in its tutorialization, and required patches to make more sense.

  • Creating a difficulty curve to match player skill required extra time and playtesting to finetune to match the average new player.

Feedback

Feedback was given by the module lecturer, who had experience making multiple hypercasual mobile games for mobile app stores. They were very receptive to the UI design and style, added aesthetics to the game's stability. I received a mark of 75% and achieved an A grade in this module.
