Anglia Ruskin Library Escape Game

A webgame contracted by Anglia Ruskin University's Library team to educate students about the library.

  • Original game created in Twine, an open-source tool for text-based games in a browser.

  • Developed under contract for Anglia Ruskin University's library department, based in Chelmsford, Essex, UK, though work was done remotely at home.

  • CSS used for styling the game.

  • Single person contract lasting six weeks part time, from June 4th to July 19th. Was contracted for a QoL update on April 25th.

Project Overview

In the summer of 2021, I was contracted to design a game to teach students new to Anglia Ruskin University about the services the library offers both on the various ARU campuses and online. This game was required to run on as many systems as possible and be as accessible as possible, so the Twine engine was chosen due to its flexibility, HTML compatibility, and flexible use of CSS. The game's UI was planned and designed in accordance with the Dyslexia Friendly Style Guide created by the British Dyslexia Association and with colorblindness in mind in its color schemes, so that the game's text was as legible as possible. I worked on the game's programming, UI and design.

Project Challenges

  • I learnt how to communicate efficiently due to issues such as internet connection, conflicting work schedules, and glitches involving Microsoft Teams.

  • I learnt how to finish and polish a game in a significantly shorter timeframe than I was used to, and how to scope down in reaction to these conditions.

  • I learnt how to clearly explain game design and development concepts to those new to game development process.

  • I learnt how to revise my UI design process to make sure the UI I develop is clear, legible and accessible whilst also fitting the aesthetics of the game.

Feedback

Upon finishing the game, the contractors thanked me for completing the project to their standards, and using my knowledge as both an ARU student and game developer to better the game's overall quality.
